Cat Nutrition Guide: Feeding Different Breeds

2026-04-13

Not all cats have the same nutritional needs. Breed, size, activity level, and health predispositions all influence what and how much your cat should eat. Large breeds like Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats need more calories than smaller breeds. A Maine Coon may need 300-400 calories per day, while a Singapura might need only 150-200. However, overfeeding large breeds can lead to obesity and joint problems. High-energy breeds like Bengals, Abyssinians, and Siamese burn more calories through their active lifestyles. These breeds benefit from higher protein diets that support muscle maintenance and sustained energy. Breeds prone to urinary issues, such as Persians and Himalayans, benefit from wet food diets that increase water intake. Adequate hydration helps prevent crystal formation and urinary tract infections. Hairless breeds like the Sphynx have higher metabolic rates since they expend more energy maintaining body temperature. They often need more calories per pound of body weight than furred breeds. Breeds with flat faces (brachycephalic breeds) like Persians and Exotic Shorthairs may struggle with standard kibble shapes. Look for breed-specific kibble designed for their jaw structure, or choose wet food. Always consult your veterinarian for personalized nutrition advice, especially for breeds with known health predispositions.
