Methodology
Data Collection
CatBreedPeek compiles breed data from multiple authoritative sources:
- Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) — Official breed standards, group classifications, and registration data.
- The International Cat Association (TICA) — Breed standards and recognition status for newer and hybrid breeds.
- Veterinary Research — Peer-reviewed studies on breed-specific health conditions, prevalence rates, and severity classifications.
- Breed Club Publications — Detailed temperament descriptions and care recommendations from breed-specific organizations.
Rating System
Our 1-5 rating system for characteristics like affection, energy, and intelligence is based on:
- CFA and TICA breed standard descriptions
- Veterinary and behaviorist consensus from published guides
- Cross-referencing multiple breed reference databases
Ratings represent breed-typical behavior. Individual cats may differ based on genetics, socialization, and environment.
Health Data
Health conditions are sourced from veterinary databases and breed health surveys. Severity classifications (mild, moderate, severe) are based on impact on quality of life, treatment complexity, and prevalence within the breed.
Updates
We review and update our database quarterly to incorporate new veterinary research, changes in breed standards, and updated popularity data.
Limitations
Our data represents breed-level tendencies, not individual predictions. Mixed-breed cats and cats from different breeding lines may vary from listed characteristics. Always consult breed-specific experts and veterinary professionals for individual guidance.
